a) NGO Panel of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board

The WBPCB has engaged 223 new non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to work on creating awareness for environmental protection in the state. Chosen on the basis of an analysis of their ability to save the environment, these NGOs, located throughout the state, would primarily shoulder the responsibility of communicating the Board's mandates to people far and wide. The NGOs would facilitate addressing current environmental concerns, such as restriction on the use of plastic carry bags, controlling noise pollution, wetland conservation etc. In order to encourage the proactive efforts made by these enlisted NGOs to preserve the environment and improve the condition of living, those who have played a commendable role in safeguarding the environment during the past year are bestowed with the Environment Excellence Award. Moreover, in a bid to provide administrative and technical understanding of the core environmental issues, the enlisted NGOs are trained in groups. The basic idea of the training programmes is to

b) Public hearing during environmental clearance

Public hearings are called for in case of projects involving large displacement or having severe environmental ramifications. All development projects as per Schedule I of the notification of the Ministry of Environment & Forests ,Government of India dated 27/01/1994 require environmental clearance from the said Ministry for which public hearing is conducted by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
