Wildlife Campaign

THEME: Forests and Wildlife

Under the theme ‘Forests and Wildlife’ of the Environmental Campaign of WBPCB, a nature trail was jointly organised with the Birla Industrial Technological Museum (BITM) at the Science City Complex on September 10, 2003. About 201 students from four schools, namely, Birati High School (49), Birati Mahajati Vidyamandir (49), Loreto Day School–Sealdah (78) and Dumdum Kishore Bharti (25) participated in the programme.

During the trail, the students were given a worksheet that they had to work on. The worksheet had various aspects, for instance, there were some trees marked with an identification number in the nature trail area. The students were asked to identify the trees and indicate the number by the side of the tree given in the worksheet. In a similar fashion, they learnt to identify animals including arthropods and birds as well as recognise footprints left behind by some animals like goat, rabbit, cow etc.

The world of nature is a living kaleidoscope of all the plants and animals that live harmoniously in a perfectly balanced system. It is imperative for the young children to understand how nature works before learning the ways to conserve and care for it. This workshop provided these young minds with an excellent opportunity to grow, by way of observing the relationships between plants and animals. The students thus experienced all the fun and excitement by taking a simple walk through nature that turned out to be a real journey of exploration and discovery.
