new Web Portal (www.enviswb.gov.in) of the West Bengal ENVIS
(Environmental Information System) centre
was inaugurated on May 29, 2006 at the Regional Office of the West Bengal
Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) housed at Camac Street. Shri Mohanta
Chatterjee, Hon'ble Minister-in-charge, Departments of Environment, Food
Processing & Horticulture, Government of West Bengal inaugurated the ENVIS centre.
Shri D. Mukhopadhyay (Director, MoEF), Shri G. D. Gautama (Principal Secretary,
Departments of Information Technology & Environment, Government of West Bengal),
Prof. S. K. Banerjee (Chairman, WBPCB) and Shri S. K. Gupta (Member Secretary, WBPCB)
were present on the occasion.
This portal is dynamic with content management software.
It has dedicated pages for the West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Institute of
Environmental Studies & Wetland Management and East Kolkata Wetland
Management Authority). It will also have links with the WBPCB, Ministry of
Environment & Forests (MoEF), Government of India (GoI) and other ENVIS
Centres. This will ensure the immediate objectives of the ENVIS programme.
About ENVIS
The MoEF envisaged the establishment of the ENVIS
centres in collaboration with the State Governments across the country to link
up available data on issues related to environment. The aim was:
- Creation of a website on environment;
- Identification of information/data gaps in the
specified subjects areas and to take action to fill these gaps;
- Creation of database on environmental issues to be put
on the website;
- Contribution of news items for ENVIS newsletter on
monthly basis;
- To establish and operate a distributed clearinghouse
to answer and channel queries related to the allocated subjects; and
- To establish linkage with information user, carriers
and providers from among government, academia, business and NGOs.
Future plan of the ENVIS Centre
- Creation of Digitized Library & Data Bank:
The Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal has funded a number of
important research projects relating to environment. The findings of such
research projects will be preserved in a digitalized form for the future. The
stakeholders (Universities, Research Institutes and others) may access such
data through the Internet. Extract of such data may also be uploaded in the
website for the worldwide end user.
- Regular updating of data in the web portal by a
dedicated team. The department will closely supervise this operation.
- Project Assistance: Funding of projects to identify data gaps and knowledge gaps leading
to providing inputs in making policy decisions.
- Publication: Publication of literature of topical
subjects related to different subject areas of environment.
