Carry Bag Alternatives

In order to tackle the problem of plastic waste, which is an integral part of the WBPCB’s drive for a cleaner West Bengal, the Board has been engaged in finding viable substitutes to plastic carry bags which have been posing a major environmental problem in the state. In this regard, a workshop was organised at Paribesh Bhawan, Salt Lake City on August 30, 2003 at 11 a.m. for the trainers (Contact details of the trainers) in various NGOs for undertaking the manufacture of carry bags made of eco-friendly materials like paper, grass, cloth and jute. 44-odd participants who were primarily teachers of destitute homes and schools for special children took part in the workshop that had the following features:

At 4 p.m. on the same day, a meeting was organised to discuss the feasibility of switching over to eco-friendly bags in the shops and markets of Kolkata. The speakers (Contact details of the speakers) ranged from researchers to government officials - the key players who are responsible in making WBPCB’s campaign against plastic carry bags a success. The meeting (An outline of the meeting) was followed by an exhibition of eco-friendly products that might be used as viable alternatives to plastic carry bags.
