A Report On the Environment Workshop
Held at Physics Department, Kalyani University

8th September, 2003

A one day workshop on Environment was conducted by JBNSTS in collaboration with West Bengal Pollution Control Board and Department of Environment. Government of West Bengal, as a part of environmental campaign.

In this workshop two eminent speakers discussed various aspects of the environment and what every individual must do to protect it from deteriorating. The final aim of the workshop was to sensitize the participants and motivate them to carry out projects to conserve our resources.

The methodology followed was a combination of the use of both theory-based lectures and practical sessions, which included many environment-based activities.

The first lecture was given by Dr. U K De, Professor in M.Phil Program in Environmental Science, Jadavpur University. He discussed various issues related to water and soil. He also discussed many important issues like rainwater harvesting and its various techniques.

The valedictory lecture was given by Prof (Dr.) Shyamal Sengupta Emeritus Professor in Physics. He spoke on the topic of 'Science and Society' where he dealt. with topics of ongoing development versus deteriorating environment.

The next part of the program was conducted by Ms. Aditi Bandyopadhyay, Project. Officer of JBNSTS. She conducted some Eco-friendly activities, which encouraged students to observe and explore their environment and to stop wastage of natural resources.

The final session was the feedback and evaluation session, where the participating students expressed their opinion about the workshop and whether it had been useful in motivating them.

A total number of 41 students from various schools of Nadia District took part in the workshop. They participated very enthusiastically. The feedback shows that they have been sensitized to various environmental issues facing us nowadays. The question asked for the evaluation (as given in the next page) was to list down various activities performed by an individual from morning to night and various wastes that are produced due to it. Also they had to list down ways to minimize the wastage. Some very interesting answers to the problem were received, which shows that they are motivated enough to start thinking of alternative methods to reduce wastage.
