Environment Excellence Award 2007

Introduction

Globally the concept of environmental pollution control has undergone a paradigm shift during last few decades. The command-and-control approach for environmental regulation is gradually making way to self monitoring, self regulation and partnership between the regulator and to be regulated. Corporate responsibility for fulfilling environmental obligation has become the buzz word even in countries like India.

The protection and preservation of environment is possible only through joint efforts of the regulators, industries, local bodies, non-governmental organisations, and other service sector agencies. Whereas, the industries and the local bodies are required to take effective steps to control pollution from industrial and municipal sources respectively, the non-governmental organisations and other service sector agencies are required to initiate environmental protection programme and spread environmental awareness among people. The service sector agencies are on one hand facilitating various services and on the other hand they are also responsible for environmental protection and preservation.

Conception

In order to recognize and encourage such proactive institutional efforts for betterment of the environment, implemented through a structure policy, dedication to the cause, self monitoring and compliance, in the year 2002, the West Bengal Cleaner Production Centre (WBCPC), a collaborative effort of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), instituted the "Environment Excellence Award" of its first kind. The award is aimed at driving environment management as a tool of competitiveness within different groups.
